From Customers to Owners: Why I’m Building a Different System

Posted on March 29, 2026 by Scott Matchmaker

Both my grandfathers were good men

One was a local councillor

Fair

Straight

Respected

He ran a business

And every Thursday, he went to his lodge as part of Freemasonry

As a kid, I didn’t question it

As a man, I understand it

It was access

My other grandfather

Walked from Poland to Italy

To fight for the Allies in World War II

His family lost everything

Their land taken when Russia occupied parts of Poland

He came to England with nothing

No network

No position

No access

And he built a life from scratch

Both good men

One worked inside a system

One had to rebuild without one

That’s the difference

Power doesn’t hide

It meets regularly

Same people

Same room

Same conversations

Week after week

Familiarity becomes trust

Trust becomes opportunity

That’s the system

The lie we’re told

We’re told systems reward merit

They don’t

Systems don’t pick the best

They pick the safest

And the safest

Is the most familiar

Conformity isn’t weakness

It’s incentive

In the Asch conformity experiments

Around 75% of people conformed

Even when they knew it was wrong

People don’t sell out overnight

They adjust

Bit by bit

Until it feels normal

Closed systems tighten

Quietly

Familiar gets chosen

Risk gets avoided

Position gets protected

And over time

Access concentrates

Same people in

Same people deciding

Not conspiracy

Structure

The illusion

One success story

“See, it works”

It doesn’t

If ten are good enough

And one gets through

That’s not merit

That’s selection

The truth most won’t say

Merit creates movement

Movement is hard to control

So systems choose stability

But stability without access

Is control

The reality

People don’t fail because they lack ability

They fail because they lack access

The danger of ignoring this

If you ignore this

You accept it

Closed systems don’t just limit opportunity

They limit progress

They recycle the same thinking

Until everything slows

Until people stop believing

The part people underestimate

People underestimate the power they have

Globally, the top 10% own roughly 70–75% of total wealth

That’s not just inequality

That’s concentration of access

And access is where everything starts

My grandfather rebuilt his life from nothing

So people aren’t powerless

They’re just not organised

Every system exists because people accept it

And the moment people stop accepting it

New systems can be built

But there’s something deeper

People don’t just need access

They need purpose

And right now

That’s disappearing

Across the UK and US

Young men are participating less in community groups, clubs, and shared spaces

More isolated

More disconnected

Less belonging

And when you don’t belong

You don’t feel alive

That’s the bigger problem

This is where people are getting it wrong

We’ve built systems that turn people into consumers

Not participants

Not builders

Just observers

And then we wonder why people feel disconnected

The opportunity

Give people ownership

And you give them purpose

Give them something to build

And they come alive

The greatest thing you can give someone

Is purpose

So what do you do

You don’t wait

You don’t ask

You don’t complain

You build

This is where I stand

I’m not trying to get into their system

I’m building a different one

One where access isn’t controlled

One where opportunity is visible

One that looks more like democracy

Less like control

And most importantly

One where people have something real to belong to

Why I’m crowdfunding

I’m not crowdfunding just to build a club

I’m crowdfunding to build ownership

Most systems turn people into customers

You pay

You consume

You leave

No stake

No upside

That’s extraction

The alternative

Not customers

Owners

Because if access is the problem

Ownership is the solution

Football clubs should belong to the people

Especially young men who need something real

To belong to

To build

To fight for

The reality people avoid

If you stay a customer

You fund a system you will never benefit from

The risk

This is the hardest thing I’ve ever attempted

And most people underestimate me

That’s fine

Because I know what this is

It’s a volume game

I’m not here for tyre kickers

Working with me works both ways

And I’m selective

Because I have to be

If access is controlled

Merit is optional

And when merit is optional

The outcome is already decided

That’s not a fair system

And that’s exactly why I’m building a new one with Football Is For The Fans.
