I BUILT HAIRBOND FROM BEHIND A SALON CHAIR

Scott Michaels: The Story Behind Hairbond

I was a hairdresser before I was a founder. Hairbond began behind the chair in Lancaster in 2008. Everything Hairbond is today still comes back to that.

Hairbond did not begin in a boardroom.

It began behind a salon chair.

Before I founded Hairbond, I was a hairdresser. I cut hair, styled it, tested products and listened to customers.

Later, I owned The Cutting Room in Lancaster.

That salon became the place where the idea for Hairbond started to make sense.

Customers would look in the mirror after a haircut and ask:

“What have you put in my hair?”

That question mattered.

A haircut can look perfect when somebody leaves a salon. The real test comes the next morning.

Can they recreate it?

Can the product give them the same texture, control, shape and finish?

That became the principle behind Hairbond:

The product should finish the haircut.

Not marketing.

Not hype.

Not the packaging.

Performance.

I FOUNDED HAIRBOND IN 2008

I founded Hairbond in 2008.

It was built as an independent British professional hair styling brand.

The starting point was simple.

Hairdressers and barbers need products they can trust.

Customers need products they can actually use when they get home.

That is still what Hairbond exists to do.

Men do not really buy clay, fibre, wax or styling cream.

They buy an outcome.

They want more texture.

More control.

More volume.

Less shine.

More movement.

A better haircut.

And ultimately, they want to look in the mirror and feel better about themselves.

That is the business Hairbond has always really been in.

FROM LANCASTER TO HAIRBOND

Hairbond started small.

The ambition did not.

We built through professional hairdressing.

Independent salons.

Barbers.

Customers.

Then distributors.

Then international markets.

But growth was never enough on its own.

The product had to work.

Hairdressers find out very quickly when a styling product is poor.

Too greasy.

Too dry.

Too heavy.

Not enough hold.

Wrong finish.

Bad fragrance.

Difficult to wash out.

There is nowhere to hide.

That professional feedback helped shape Hairbond.

It still does.

PRODUCTS HAVE TO EARN THE HAIRBOND NAME

Hairbond began receiving recognition early in its development.

Products including Moulder and Distorter received awards and editorial recognition, helping establish Hairbond as a serious British styling brand rather than simply another product range.

But awards were never the objective.

They were confirmation.

The objective was always to make products professionals wanted to use again.

That remains the test today.

A new Hairbond product does not exist because we need something new to talk about.

It should solve something.

A different haircut.

A different finish.

A change in how men style their hair.

A problem behind the chair.

If it cannot do that, it does not need to exist.

FOOTBALL BECAME PART OF THE STORY

Hair and football have always overlapped.

A footballer changes his haircut on Saturday.

By Monday somebody walks into a barbershop with a photograph.

That relationship made football a natural part of Hairbond.

Players used the products.

Hairdressers working around football used them.

Hairbond became associated with the dressing room, the barber chair and the culture around the game.

It was never about pretending Hairbond was a football company.

It was about understanding something simple:

Hair is part of identity.

Football understands identity better than almost any other industry.

So does barbering.

FROM THE BARBER CHAIR TO SPORT AND ENTERTAINMENT

Over the years Hairbond products have travelled far beyond Lancaster.

Professional stylists have used them.

Footballers have used them.

People working in entertainment have used them.

That has always meant more to me than simply paying somebody to hold a tub in a photograph.

The strongest endorsement is still:

A professional had a choice and chose Hairbond.

That is how I want the brand to grow.

Performance first.

Everything else second.

HAIRBOND TODAY

Hairbond has become bigger than one website.

Today there are four connected parts to the story.

Each has a different job.

HAIRBOND.COM

The Product

Hairbond.com is the official Hairbond consumer destination.

This is where customers discover the range, understand the products and buy Hairbond.

The range includes established Hairbond products alongside the next generation of styling products being developed for the way men wear their hair today.

Hairbond.com answers:

Which Hairbond product is right for me?

SHOP HAIRBOND → HAIRBOND.COM

PARTNERS.HAIRBOND.COM

The Professional Business

Hairbond came from professional hairdressing.

That relationship matters.

Partners.Hairbond.com exists for:

Barbers.

Hairdressers.

Salons.

Professional retailers.

Wholesalers.

Distributors.

Hairbond should grow with the professional industry rather than away from it.

Hairbond Partners answers:

How can my business work with Hairbond?

BECOME A HAIRBOND PARTNER → PARTNERS.HAIRBOND.COM

JOURNAL.HAIRBOND.COM

The Knowledge

Hairbond has almost two decades of stories, lessons, products, mistakes, people and industry experience behind it.

I do not want that knowledge disappearing.

That is why we built the Hairbond Journal.

It covers:

Men’s hairstyles.

Styling advice.

Barbering.

Hairdressing.

Product development.

Professional retail.

Football culture.

Hair industry history.

And the thinking behind Hairbond itself.

It is where we can explain why, not simply sell what.

Hairbond Journal answers:

What does Hairbond know?

READ HAIRBOND JOURNAL → JOURNAL.HAIRBOND.COM

SCOTTMATCHMAKER.CO.UK

The Founder

That leaves this site.

ScottMatchmaker.co.uk explains the person behind Hairbond.

Why I created it.

What happened along the way.

What I learned.

What I got right.

What I got wrong.

And how Hairbond connects with the other businesses and projects I have built.

ScottMatchmaker.co.uk answers:

Who built Hairbond, and why?

FOUR DESTINATIONS. ONE HAIRBOND STORY.

This is the architecture.

Hairbond.com

Commerce

Products and customers.

Partners.Hairbond.com

Trade

Barbers, salons, retailers and distributors.

Journal.Hairbond.com

Authority

Knowledge, education, history and editorial.

ScottMatchmaker.co.uk

Founder

The person, history and commercial story connecting everything.

They are not four unrelated websites.

They form one Hairbond ecosystem.

WHY THAT CONNECTION MATTERS

A customer may discover Hairbond through a barber.

A barber may discover Hairbond through an article.

A distributor may discover the company through Hairbond Partners.

A journalist may discover the founder through this site.

They should all reach the same story.

Scott Michaels founded Hairbond in 2008.

Hairbond began from professional hairdressing.

It remains an independent British styling brand.

Hairbond.com represents the products.

Partners.Hairbond.com represents the professional business.

Journal.Hairbond.com represents the knowledge.

ScottMatchmaker.co.uk represents the founder story.

No confusion.

One entity.

One history.

One brand.

WHY I STILL CARE ABOUT HAIRBOND

I have worked on plenty of things since 2008.

Hairbond is different.

I created it.

I remember when nobody knew the name.

I remember the salon.

The early products.

The first customers.

The first accounts.

The mistakes.

The products that worked.

The ones that did not.

The people who helped us.

The moments when Hairbond suddenly felt bigger than the room it started in.

You cannot manufacture that history later.

It happened.

And we are still building it.

THE NEXT HAIRBOND CHAPTER

Men’s hair changes.

Products have to change with it.

Haircuts become shorter.

Then longer.

Matt finishes dominate.

Then shine returns.

Texture changes.

Fringes return.

Products designed for one generation eventually stop answering the problems of another.

Hairbond cannot stand still.

That is why the next generation of Hairbond products matters.

But the principle will not change.

Make the haircut work.

That was the idea in Lancaster.

It is still the idea today.
